“The forest must be safe and accessible if you are alone,” says Pircher. She also notes “forest bathing is not a substitute for therapy for severe depression.” How do you find a good forest for forest bathing? “On flat terrain and level paths, even people with limited mobility can forest bathe perfectly,” she says. Anywhere in nature is fine, Pircher advises. You don't need to go to a fancy resort, though, to forest-bathe. Then one goes into the forest with a completely different consciousness, and the feeling from the professional forest bathing can be brought out again.” Can anyone do forest bathing? Are there different types of forest bathing? “The diagnosis for many was: You have worked too much, your system has said stop.” In an effort to combat this, trails were created and people were encouraged with promotional initiatives to go into the forest and spend more time in nature. “In Japan, there is a word karoshi, which means death by overwork,” says Pircher. How did forest bathing come about?Īccording to Pircher, the practice originated in Japan. “With the so-called shinrin-yoku, we can detach ourselves from daily stressors, from the sensory overload of the city and daily life, block everything out and concentrate entirely on our senses.” The goal? To activate our senses and be at one with nature. “Forest bathing is a tradition originating in Japan that allows us to relax in and with nature,” says Pircher. “Ready for forest bathing?” she asked me in her velvety, relaxed voice, which immediately made me feel calmer.
